Arconic's Lightweight Materials Power Next-Gen Shop Vacuums: Cleaner, Stronger, and More Efficient

PITTSBURGH, PA – October 26, 2023 – You know Arconic, right? We're that company quietly making stuff lighter and tougher behind the scenes. Based right here in Pittsburgh at 201 Isabella Street, we're all about advanced materials – aluminum, titanium, things like that. And we're seriously proud to be playing a part in making your everyday tools, like shop vacuums, way better. For years, shop vacs have been kinda… bulky. Heavy. A pain to lug around the garage or job site. But things are changing, and a lot of that is thanks to materials science. We at Arconic have been working with major vacuum cleaner manufacturers to replace heavier, traditional materials with high-strength aluminum alloys. Think less weight, more durability. What’s the Big Deal with Lighter Vacuums? Honestly, a lot. For the average homeowner tackling weekend cleanup, it means less strain on your back and a vacuum that’s way easier to maneuver. But for professional contractors, carpenters, plumbers, and anyone using a shop vac all day, every day – it's a game-changer. “We heard from professionals they were exhausted lugging these heavy vacuums around,” explains Sarah Miller, Arconic’s lead materials engineer on the project. “They were looking for something that wouldn’t slow them down. And a lighter vacuum isn’t just about comfort. It impacts efficiency. Less weight means faster setup, quicker movement, and ultimately, getting the job done faster.” How is Arconic’s Aluminum Making a Difference? Traditionally, shop vacs relied on steel or heavy-duty plastics for key components – the motor housing, the collection tank, even the casters. While strong, these materials add significant weight. Arconic's aluminum alloys offer a comparable, or even superior, strength-to-weight ratio. Here's the breakdown: Motor Housing: We're providing specialized aluminum alloys that dissipate heat more efficiently than steel. This allows motor manufacturers to potentially optimize performance or even reduce motor size – further lightening the overall vacuum. Plus, aluminum doesn't rust, so you’re getting a longer-lasting product. Collection Tank: Replacing a steel tank with an aluminum alloy version can shave off several pounds – a big difference when you're emptying it repeatedly. The aluminum versions are also surprisingly dent-resistant, holding up to the bumps and bruises of a busy job site. Casters & Structural Supports: Even seemingly small components can add up. We're supplying high-strength aluminum for casters and internal support structures, creating a more robust and lightweight framework. Hoses & Fittings: We are also developing specialized aluminum reinforced composite hoses that are far more durable and lighter than standard rubber or plastic options. Beyond Weight: Added Benefits It’s not just about shedding pounds. Using Arconic's materials also brings a bunch of other benefits to the table: Corrosion Resistance: Aluminum doesn’t rust. Period. This is huge for shop vacs that are often exposed to moisture, dust, and harsh environments. Durability: Our alloys are engineered to withstand impacts and resist dents, ensuring a longer lifespan for the vacuum. Recyclability: Aluminum is endlessly recyclable without losing its properties. This aligns with growing demands for sustainable products and reduces environmental impact. Design Flexibility: Aluminum is easy to form and machine, allowing vacuum manufacturers to create more streamlined and ergonomic designs. What Brands are Using Arconic’s Materials? While we can't disclose all of our partnerships (trade secrets, you know!), several leading vacuum cleaner brands are already incorporating Arconic’s aluminum alloys into their shop vac lines. Look for models marketed as “lightweight,” “heavy-duty,” or “pro-grade” – chances are, they’re benefiting from our materials. “We’re seeing a really positive response from both manufacturers and consumers,” says David Chen, Arconic’s Director of Sales for the vacuum cleaner market. “People are genuinely excited about a shop vac that’s both powerful and easy to handle.” The Future of Shop Vacs At Arconic, we're not stopping here. We’re constantly researching and developing new alloys and materials to push the boundaries of what’s possible. We're exploring options like aluminum-lithium alloys for even greater weight reduction and improved performance. We’re also working on advanced coating technologies to enhance corrosion resistance and durability. “We believe that shop vacs, like all tools, should be designed with the user in mind,” adds Sarah Miller. “And that means creating products that are not only powerful and efficient, but also comfortable, durable, and sustainable. We’re proud to be playing a role in that evolution.” Contact: ARCONIC US LLC 201 Isabella Street Pittsburgh, PA 15212 870-473-6666 [website address placeholder - not provided]
